This Friday we welcome the New Moon of Spring. In the Hebrew lunar cycle that I follow, it is Nisan, the Moon of Miracles and Liberation. Pesach/Passover.
Nee’sahn ניסן, meaning Miraculous
Attribute: Speech, Communication שיחה
Spirit: Water מים ma’yeem whose quality is Mother of Life
Stone: Ruby אודם O’dehm whose quality is protection against miscarriage
Herb: Balsam צרי tz’aree
Zodiac: Lamb טלה t’leh
To me, this means a month of spring cleaning and body tonic cleansing. It means sun salutations, time outdoors, and yogic twists. It means clear speech and clear vision. Nisan is auspiciously gifted with the qualities of freedom and liberation, and also with the anxiety that often accompanies these. The following quote from Miriam Maron’s Ancient Moon Wisdom about the sap of the Balsam bark that is used in sacred incense blend encapsulates the spiritual essence of this Moon of Spring and Liberation:
Balsam is about narrowing something down to its most basic, most fundamental power or quality, removing all the fluff, all the outer trimmings that conceal our deepest truths, and leaving us naked with our authenticity. In the sacred incense mix, this powerful herb stripped the other herbs and plants of their external garb so that the blend became that much more potent. The tza’ree (balsam) herb shrinks our world somewhat so that we can restore our self-essence and remember that we are larger than our problems. As such, it corresponds to the month of Nisan, the Moon of Spring, the time of the Exodus, all of which is about emerging from the constrictiveness of the frozen earth of winter and the bondage of slavery.
